According to the San Diego Police Department, family members discovered a deceased body in a San Diego home’s freezer on Friday.

About 11:45 a.m. local time, the “out-of-town” family members discovered the body in the freezer of a house on the 4900 block of Zion Avenue. They informed the police right away, according to a news release issued by the police on Saturday.

Police stated that while they believe the remains to be female, they will not confirm any more physical information until an official identification can be made.

The body was discovered in a “unusual location,” and the SDPD reported that their homicide unit was brought in to look into it.

The agency stated that the cause of death was unknown and that it was unclear whether there had been any traumatic injuries due to the state of the body. The cause of death was being investigated by the office of the medical examiner.

“Detectives are continuing to gather information to understand what happened and why the body was inside the freezer,” police stated. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police department’s homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
