Rain Havoc: Death Toll Rises to 318 in Wayanad, Rescue Efforts Continue

Wayanad, Kerala – The situation in Wayanad remains dire as the death toll from rain-triggered landslides has risen to 318, with over 225 people injured. The landslides occurred in the early hours of Tuesday in the Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Attamala regions.
Rescue efforts have entered their fourth day, with ongoing attempts to locate and assist survivors amidst challenging conditions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Wayanad, predicting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Weather Alerts Issued Across Kerala and Himachal Pradesh
The IMD has issued yellow alerts for the districts of Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, and Malappuram in Kerala, and red alerts for Kullu, Mandi, and Kangara districts in Himachal Pradesh, anticipating very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning.

School Closures and Relief Efforts
Schools and other educational institutions are closed in several districts, including Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. In Palakkad, schools, anganwadis, tuition centres, and madrasas are also closed. Relief camps are being run in Ernakulam and Idukki.
Situation in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand
Cloud bursts in Himachal Pradesh have claimed the lives of 5 people and left about 50 missing. In Uttarakhand, heavy overnight rain resulted in 12 deaths, destroyed homes, and left several areas submerged. Rescue teams from SDRF, NDRF, DDRF, district police, and administration are actively involved in rescue operations.
The relentless rain and resulting natural disasters across multiple regions have led to significant loss of life and property. Ongoing rescue efforts aim to mitigate the impact and assist those affected.
