‘Angered’ by ransomware hack, PlayStation studio published

Spider-Man 2’s developers were “extremely distressed” by the extent of the ransomware attack that hit their business.

The recent “criminal cyberattack” “saddened and angered” the staff at Insomniac, the PlayStation studio.

Sensitive stolen information released by a hacker organization included employee information, corporate correspondence, and early elements of a planned Wolverine game.

The company expressed gratitude to fans for their “overwhelming” support in a statement.

Insomniac explained that it had postponed making a statement for a few days so that its employees may “support each other” following the “emotional toll” of the breach.

It said it was working quickly to assess the extent of the damage, but that upcoming PS5 exclusive Wolverine “continues as planned”.

“The game is in production and will no doubt evolve throughout development, as do all our plans,” added the statement.

“We will share official information about Marvel’s Wolverine when the time is right.”

Fellow games developers, journalists and fans have decried the cyberattack, advising people not to share or republish any of the content.

The ransomware collective Rhysida has taken ownership of the attack and revealed that it was also responsible for the one that occurred at the British Library last month.

This technique involves infecting a company’s computer network with malicious software, locking its files, and then requesting cash to unlock them.

Aside from confirming that the Wolverine game will have a “mature” tone in comparison to the Spider-Man games, Insomniac has not revealed many official details about the game.

The leak occurred the same week a British court sentenced a teenager to an indefinite hospital stay for his involvement in a cyberattack on Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar.
