Low- and Middle-Income Countries: The program aims to build capacity in low- and middle-income countries for the development and production of mRNA-based vaccines ¹.

Geneva, Switzerland – The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched an ambitious initiative to build capacity in low- and middle-income countries for the development and production of mRNA-based vaccines. This effort aims to address a significant gap in global pandemic preparedness and promote equitable access to life-saving vaccines.

According to WHO officials, the program will focus on technology transfer, training and support, infrastructure development, and strengthening regulatory frameworks in participating countries. By doing so, the WHO seeks to enable low- and middle-income countries to produce mRNA vaccines, reducing their dependence on external supplies and enhancing global pandemic preparedness.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of equitable access to vaccines,” said Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s Technical Lead for COVID-19 and Emerging Diseases. “This initiative will help level the playing field and ensure that all countries have the capacity to protect their populations from pandemics.”

The WHO’s initiative has been welcomed by global health experts, who see it as a critical step towards addressing the vaccine equity gap. As the world continues to grapple with the threat of pandemics, this program offers hope for a more resilient and equitable global health system.
