Samsung Launches Galaxy Ring, Its First Smart Ring

Samsung has bring out its latest wearable device, the Galaxy Ring, at its Galaxy Unpacked
event. The smart ring is the company’s first attack into the smart ring market, which is
currently dominated by Finnish health tech firm, Oura.

The Galaxy Ring uses artificial intelligence (AI) to track various health metrics, including
heart rate, sleep, menstrual cycle, skin temperature, and exercise. It is compatible with
Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones that run on Android 11 or above.
According to James Kitto, vice president and head of Samsung’s mobile division in the UK
& Ireland, the Galaxy Ring is the company’s “smallest and most discrete product yet,
offering accurate 24/7 health, wellness and sleep tracking.”
The smart ring is priced at £399 in the UK and will be available for purchase on July 24. It
comes in three colors – black, gold, and silver – and is available in US sizes 5 to 13.
Analysts say that Samsung’s entry into the smart ring market could make the devices more
mainstream. “For most consumers, the smart ring from Samsung will be the first contact
they will have with the smart ring, and that top of mind awareness makes a huge difference
in the long-term,” says Francisco Jeronimo , analyst for market research firm IDC.
However, concerns have been raised about the collection of health data by smart rings and
other wearable devices. Dr. Efpraxia Zamani, associate professor of information systems at
Durham University, warns that users should be aware of what data is being collected, how
it is being shared, and where it is being stored.
The launch of the Galaxy Ring marks a significant move by Samsung to expand its presence
in the wearable devices market, which is expected to grow significantly in the coming years
