Succession, The Bear, and Conflicts amongst Victors

The Bear, Beef, and Succession were the main winners at Monday’s Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

Succession won best drama series overall as well as acting awards for Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, and Matthew Macfadyen.

“It was a great pleasure to do it, but it was a great sadness to end the show,” according to creator Jesse Armstrong.

At last, Sir Elton John achieved EGOT status when he received his first Emmy Award at the presentation.

This implies that he has become a member of an exclusive group of entertainers who have garnered Tony, Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar awards.

Elton Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium became the first British singer-songwriter to win an Emmy after being nominated for the first time and winning best live variety show.

However, following a knee surgery, Sir Elton was unable to accept the honor. After the victory, he quipped on Instagram that his knee ailment was “a gentle reminder, perhaps, of a lifetime spent jumping off pianos” and posted that he was “on cloud nine”.

He concluded: “Honoured to have joined the hallowed ranks of EGOT winners, here’s to the joy of music and the magic it brings to our lives!”

Abbott Elementary and The White Lotus were among the other winners that evening.

After four seasons, the critically acclaimed drama Succession—which centers on a media magnate and the power battles within his dysfunctional family—came to an end last year.

It was well rewarded at the Emmys, taking home awards for outstanding drama series as well as writing and directing credits. For their respective roles as Shiv and Roman Roy, Snook and Culkin were named best main drama actress and actor.

Snook attributed Succession’s success to “the bar being set so high and that was what spurred us on.”

“Mum and dad-thank you for having a dress-up box when I was a kid, this is where it gets you!” she said in her thank-you note to her parents.

“The biggest thank you, I think though, is to someone who won’t understand anything that I’m saying at the moment, but I carried her with me this last season and really it was her who carried me,” Snook said, dedicating the prize to her daughter.

“It’s very easy to act when you’re pregnant because you’ve got hormones raging and it was more that the proximity of her life growing inside me gave me the strength to do this and this performance.”

Armstrong was honored “for being a brilliant writer, showrunner, and gentleman” by co-star Culkin.

Before addressing her from the platform, Culkin also thanked his wife and two kids, saying, “And Jazz, I want more [children].” Maybe if I win, as you mentioned.”

He defeated Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox, two other performers from Succession who were also nominated for best drama actor.

The actor from Britain who played Shiv’s husband Tom, Macfadyen, joked in his own award speech, saying, “I must make special mention to my on-screen wife Sarah Snook, and my other on-screen wife Nicholas Braun.”

In Succession, Braun, a fellow contender, plays Cousin Greg. The audience loved the dynamic between the two characters.

“Acting with you has been one of the most wonderful things in my career, so thank you Nick, thank you Sarah,” said Macfadyen.

The show’s creator, screenwriter Armstrong, who was born in Shropshire, was also awarded the top honor for best writing in a drama series.

Jokingly, Armstrong alluded to the central premise of the play during his statement, saying, “For some reason, the name of a certain Australia-born media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, springs to mind.”

He continued: “I come from the UK and the show is about things that are close to the centre of American life and politics, and we’ve always been met with generosity and good faith and that’s part of America’s tradition of being very welcoming to outsiders.”

In other news, Jeremy Allen White, the star of The Bear, together with supporting players Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, took home three acting awards for their comedy-drama series about a chef who goes home to manage his family’s sandwich store.

“I am so full of gratitude to be standing in front of you all-I love this show so much, it filled me up, set a fire in me,” White said as he accepted his trophy.

Edebiri stated to the audience: “This is a show about found family and real family, and my parents are here tonight – thank you so much for loving me and letting me feel beautiful and black and proud of all of that.”

Netflix’s road rage-inspired series Beef topped the limited series categories, while Succession and The Bear took up six awards apiece in the drama and comedy categories.

The two stars of the program, Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, took home the awards for best actor in a limited series and best actress, respectively.

“I’m really grateful and humbled by everyone who watched the show and reached out about their own personal struggles, it’s very life-affirming, so thank you,” said creator Lee Sung Jin while accepting the award for best limited series.

Only one week had passed since several winners—including Snook, Culkin, Edebiri, White, Yeun, and Wong—picked up their awards at the Golden Globes.

Quinta Brunson, on the other hand, won the prize for best main comedy actress for her performance in Abbott Elementary, an instructional series.

Best supporting drama actress Jennifer Coolidge won for her performance in the privilege satire The White Lotus.

During her acceptance speech, Coolidge made a joke about wanting to “thank all the evil gays”—a reference to her character from The White Lotus’ second season.

For Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Niecy Nash-Betts took home the best supporting actress in a limited series award.

“I accept this award on behalf of all black and brown women who have been overpoliced and unheard, such as Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, and Glenda Cleveland,” the speaker stated.

The woman who notified the authorities about the serial killer was Cleveland, portrayed by Nash-Betts in the series.

The Daily Show With Trevor Noah took home the best talk series award, while Last Week Tonight with John Oliver had a successful night, winning best scripted variety series and writing for a variety series.

Additionally, RuPaul’s Drag Race won the award for best reality competition show.

“If a drag queen wants to read you a story at a library, listen to her because knowledge is power, and if someone tries to restrict your access to power, they are trying to scare you,” RuPaul Charles remarked, accepting the prize. I’ll let a drag queen speak now.

Charlie Puth sang the Friends theme song during the ceremony as part of the Emmy Awards’ remembrance of people who have passed away in the business, including Matthew Perry. However, the much-rumored tribute from Perry’s five co-stars never happened.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Emmy Awards, the casts of several television shows, including Grey’s Anatomy, The Sopranos, Ally McBeal, and Cheers, got back together.

Star of Dead To Me Christina Applegate, who uses a walking stick and has multiple sclerosis, started to cry when she was given a standing ovation during an award presentation.

Notable TV casts, including stars from Cheers, All in the Family, and The Sopranos, reunited on stage for the 75th Emmy Awards.

The Hollywood strikes caused a four-month delay in the Emmy awards, which were hosted by comedian and actor Anthony Anderson.

The presentation was initially set for September, but very few nominees would have been able to attend due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. Instead, the nominations were released in July.
