The 14th-ranked Maryland women’s team established an early lead and comfortably sailed to a 98-75 victory against Harvard in their season opener.

AP/COLLEGE PARK, Md. In the first half, Shyanne Sellers scored 14 of her team’s 25 points, and No. 14 Maryland easily defeated Harvard 98-75 to start the season on Monday night.

The junior point guard Sellers was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. She made all eight of her free-throw attempts, finished with three 3-pointers, and finished with seven assists.

For the Terrapins, Brinae Alexander scored fifteen points. Emma Chardon contributed ten points, and Jakia Brown-Turner added eleven.

The Terrapins took a 31-11 lead after the first quarter. Harvard maintained its speed in the second half and fell behind 52–34 at the half, only to draw as close as 82–67 with 6:09 left.

For Harvard, Harmoni Turner tallied eighteen points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Alexander Brinae contributed 15 points.

With a 564-147 record and her 22nd year as head coach of Maryland, Brenda Frese is the program’s most successful coach. She brings in seven new players to begin the season, including AP All-American honoree Brown-Turner from North Carolina State.

Harvard is lost 3-0 by Maryland. The teams’ most recent meeting took place on March 18, 2007, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which the Terps won 89-65 at home.
