TITIAN’S MASTERPIECE SELLS FOR £17.56 MILLION AT CHRISTIE’S LONDON

London, UK – Last night, Christie’s London auction house sold Titian’s “Rest on the Flight
into Egypt” (c. 1508) for a record-breaking £17.56 million ($22.17 million). This sale exceeds
the previous auction record for a work by the Renaissance artist.

PAINTING BOASTS IMPRESSIVE PROVENANCE

The wooden panel painting, measuring 18 by 25 inches, depicts Mary, Joseph, and Jesus
resting during the flight into Egypt. It has a remarkable provenance, having been owned by
dukes, archdukes, and Holy Roman Emperors. The painting was stolen twice, in 1809 and
1995, but was recovered in 2002.

OTHER NOTABLE SALES AT CHRISTIE’S

Other notable sales at Christie’s Old Masters I sale include Quentin Metsys’s “The
Madonna of the Cherries”, which fetched £10.66 million ($13.46 million), and Frans Hals’s
“Portrait of a gentleman of the de Wolff family”, which reached £5.71 million ($7.21
million).

SALE HIGHLIGHTS CHRISTIE’S CLASSIC WEEK

This sale was part of Christie’s Classic Week series, which achieved an overall total of
£43.59 million ($55.1 million). The Exceptional Sale, also part of Classic Week, totaled £7.2
million ($9.1 million). All prices include fees.

This result is a tribute to the impeccable provenance and quiet beauty of this sublime early
masterpiece by Titian said Christie’s UK chairman Orlando Rock. This picture has captured
the imaginations of audiences for more than half a millennia and will no doubt continue to
do so.
