United States: Will the USA emerge as the dominant force in the Rugby World Cup?

You’re American to begin with, after all. Rugby isn’t even played here.”

That’s what Emily, the English girlfriend of Ross Geller, noticed when the sport appeared in a 1998 episode of Friends as a plot device.

Rugby’s unusual foray into the American mainstream didn’t get any better.

 

Ross was suitably battered by a litany of liver-damaged, dentally challenged British caricatures in a game that had little to do with the real sport.

However, in the United States, things have begun to shift.

Perry Baker walked off a pitch in Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas with a cup in his hands and the cheers of 30,000 American fans echoing in his ears, two decades after that show aired.

His team from the United States had recently won the W. The United States, who finished second in the World Series Sevens rankings to establish themselves as legitimate competitors for Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020, are a true global force in the abbreviated version.

But the 15-a-side team arrived in Japan for the 2019 World Cup with little expectation of competing for the grand prize.

Former England and British and Irish Lions prop Alex Corbusier now works as an analyst for the NBC network’s rugby coverage from his home in the United States.

“If they beat Tonga and put a flag in a ground with a valiant performance against one of the big nations, that is a narrative that we can sell to the audience,” Corbusier asserts.

” On their path to reclaiming the title, they overcame New Zealand in March of this year. “In America, owning a sports franchise carries a great deal of prestige, and many of these owners have a strong passion for their respective sports.”
