Kate Moss at 50: A supermodel through the decades

In December of last year, Kate Moss went to the British Fashion Awards in London.

Today marks British supermodel Kate Moss’ 50th birthday, and she is still just as much of a cultural icon as she was when she became well-known over thirty years ago.

At age 14, a prominent model agent saw South London-born Moss, and at age 16, she started making appearances in magazines and advertisements. It is easy to understand why she is still regarded as one of Vogue’s favorite cover actresses as she marks her milestone birthday.

Photographer Corinne Day, who shot Moss for her debut Vogue cover in March 1993, remembered Moss as “just this cocky kid from Croydon” during an interview with the magazine. “She wasn’t exactly a model, but I could tell she was going to be well-known.”

The waifish, 5-foot-7-inch Moss went on to have a rapid rise to prominence as the face of the iconic “heroin chic” ’90s fashion trend, a gritty alternative to the glossy, leggy image that was popularized by other supermodels of the day, like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Claudia Schiffer.

Before long, Moss was starring in advertisements for upscale labels like Calvin Klein, Chanel, and Burberry.

Over the course of her illustrious career, she has been featured on over 40 British Vogue covers. However, it might be argued that her casual appearances attracted more attention from the public than her more formal photo shoots. The model was frequently referred to as a “global style icon” due to her love of antique clothing and her apparent ease in putting together distinctive looks.
